Two Huskers Finish Top 25 in Florida

Tom Westenberger and Will Marshall earned top-25 individual finishes to help the Nebraska men’s golf team to an eighth-place showing in a 16-team field at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate in Vero Beach, Fla., on Tuesday.

Westenberger, a senior from Wuppertal, Germany, led the Husker lineup in the 54-hole tournament by tying for 19th at 211 (-5) in an 84-golfer field. After firing rounds of 69 and 70 on Sunday, Westenberger closed the tournament with an even-par 72 Tuesday. It was Westenberger’s second-straight top-20 finish to close the fall campaign after tying for 10th at the Rich Harvest Farms Invitational (Oct. 2-4).

Marshall, a junior from Elburn, Ill., added his third consecutive top-30 finish to cap the fall by tying for 25th with a career-best 212 (-4) at Quail Valley. Marshall closed the tournament with Nebraska’s best round of the day at 71 (-1), which followed rounds of 70 and 71 on Sunday on the 7,460-yard layout.

Senior Mark Foelbaek (Jelling, Denmark) carded an even-par 72 Tuesday to close his tournament at even-par 216 in a tie for 41st, while Branden Meyer rounded out Nebraska’s count-four scoring with a 72 of his own in the final round.

Jeremy Sisson (Skaneateles, N.Y.), who entered the final round in a tie for sixth at 137 (-7) settled for a final-round 77 to end a strong tournament in a tie for 34th at 214 (-2) as Nebraska’s No. 3 overall individual finisher.

As a team, Nebraska put up a 287 (-1) on Monday to finish at 848 (-16) through three rounds. The Huskers finished eighth among 16 teams, including wins over Indiana (9th, -14), Rutgers (10th, -10) and Maryland (T14th, +7). Kansas (-35) won the team title with a seven-stroke win over runner-up Kent State (-28), while the hosts from Michigan State finished third (-23).

Nebraska’s 848 team total was its best since shooting at 846 (-20) on a 7,015-yard layout in the Desert Shootout at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz., March 20-22, 2014. Nebraska closed the 2021 fall season with six consecutive team rounds (287-285-286-277-284-287) better than par, which is believed to be the first time in school history that the Huskers have accomplished the feat.

First-year Nebraska Coach Brett Balak said he was pleased with the strides the Huskers made during the fall and hopes to continue building momentum into the spring 2022 campaign.

“These guys are playing their tails off,” Balak said. “I am really proud of them.”

Individually, Kent State’s Chris Vandette fired a final-round 67 to capture medalist honors with a three-round total of 202 (-14), three strokes ahead of the Kansas tandem of Harry Hillier (-11) and Callum Bruce (-11). Tyran Sanders (Memphis) and Peter Hinnant (Louisiana) tied for fourth at 206, while six golfers tied for sixth at 208 (-8).
