Lincoln, Neb.- At their home opener, the Huskers showed out for an exciting and impressive performance crushing the Nittany Lions 408.650-400.850.
NU claimed four event titles, as well as numerous individual titles and career-bests. Liam-Doherty Herwitz led the Big Red, earning the vault title with a score of 14.70 and finishing second overall in the NCAA national rankings. Sam Phillips earned his third career title on floor with a score of 14.00. Charlie Giles earned the pommel horse title notching a 14.35. Dylan LeClair claimed the parallel bars first-place title with a score of 13.95.
In addition to the four event titles, the Huskers had six gymnasts earn career-high scores tonight.
Rotation One
Nebraska started off the night strong on floor with senior Charlie Giles leading the lineup with a season-high score of 13.80. Big Ten Freshman of Week, Chris Hiser, followed notching a 13.85, a career-high for the Husker. Taylor Christopulos kept the momentum after earning a season-high score of 13.95. Jake Bonnay notched a 13.45, and Sam Phillips anchored the lineup after scoring a 14.00, the third career floor title for Phillips.
The Huskers moved to the second rotation after posting a season-high team score on floor of 69.050, leading against the Nittany Lions with a score of 67.500.
Rotation Two
The Huskers moved to pommel horse where they were led by the returning All-American, Charlie Giles who notched a score of 14.35, claiming the pommel horse event title. Following in second place was sophomore Yanni Chronopoulos who earned a career-high 13.95, and right behind was senior Evan Kriley, earning a 13.65 and third place title. Khalil Jackson and Travis Wong notched a 12.60 and 10.60 respectively.
Nebraska moved into the third rotation maintaining their lead against Penn State with a score of 134.300-131.300.
Rotation Three
In their third rotation, Senior Dylan LeClair led the Big Red on the rings notching a score of 13.75, a career-high. Yanni Chronopoulos maintained the energy after scoring a career-high 13.75, and tied his teammate LeClair for fourth. Liam Doherty-Herwitz followed with a personal best of 13.65. Moritz Mueller notched a career-high 13.40 while Dylan Young notched a 13.00 for the Huskers.
Going into the fourth rotation, the Huskers finished with a score of 201.850, and Penn State with a score of 199.700.
Rotation Four
NU moved on to vault where they kept the fire burning bright, notching an overall team score of 72.350 and earning the first place team score on vault in the NCAA, replacing the Stanford high score of 72.100. Liam Doherty-Herwitz led the Big Red notching a 14.70, not only earning the vault title of the night, but tieing for second place nationally in the NCAA, as well as a career-best for the Husker. Right behind, Dylan LeClair and Donte McKinney both notched a season-high 14.25 respectively. Charlie Giles earned a 14.55 and Taylor Christopulos notched a 14.50, rounding out an impressive rotation for NU.
Nebraska led Penn State going into the fifth rotation, 274.200-268.950.
Rotation Five
On parallel bars, Dylan LeClair led the team earning a 13.95 and claiming the event title for the Huskers. Yanni Chronopoulos followed closely, notching a career-best score of 13.75, claiming third place on the rotation. Evan Kriley scored a 13.50, a career-high for the senior, while Liam Doherty-Herwitz notched a 13.30. Dillan King rounded out the rotation with a score of 13.15.
The Huskers went into their final rotation still in the lead against Penn State with a score of 341.850-335.100.
Rotation Six
In their final rotation of the night, Donte McKinney made a mark notching a 13.75, taking fifth place in the NCAA national rankings, earning a season-best. Sam Phillips and Dillan King followed closely behind, earning a score of 13.60 and 13.55 respectively. Taylor Christopulos and Yanni Chronopoulos rounded out the rotation both notching a score of 12.95 to finish the night.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers capture the B1G win against the Penn State Nittany Lions with a final score of 408.650-400.850.
