Happy Thanksgiving! I hope enjoys their time eating turkey, watching football and spending time with their family (whether it’s virtually or in-person). I will be celebrating Thanksgiving at my parents house up in Canada (where I’ve been since late June). We will putting together a little Thanksgiving dinner for the three of us (complete with pumpkin pie). Big news broke in the football (soccer) world yesterday when it was announced that Diego Maradona died of a heart attack at aged 60. A tragic end for a talented legend who experienced the highest and highs on the pitch and lowest of lows off the pitch. His dribbling and techniques made his seem untouchable but his rampant drug use exposed his weaknesses. I don’t think we’ll see any player in sports carry teams to glory the way he did. His entertaining presence will be dearly missed.

The biggest key to Iowa’s five game winning streak against the Huskers has been domination on the ground; the Hawkeyes have had at least one 100 yard rusher in each game in the post-Pelini era. And in the last three years, it’s been Iowa running backs having their biggest game of the season against Nebraska.

After several iterations, Nebraska finally has its schedule for this week — a nonconference game against McNeese State to get things started and then games against Nevada and North Dakota State in the Golden Window Classic. Fred Hoiberg said his staff prepared game plans for three different teams the Huskers won’t face. Coaches are really going to earn their paychecks this season.
This year’s Huskers have already improved on last year in one way: They won their season opener. They had more points by halftime (50) than they scored in 40 minutes against UC Riverside last year. They scored 100 points for the first time since 2018. They had fun.
It’s been a challenge for NU’s run defense to stay resilient. That’s been true from the Huskers’ first Big Ten game in 2011, when they allowed 231 rushing yards to Wisconsin in a 48-17 loss, to their most recent one against Illinois, when they allowed 285 in a 41-23 loss. Stuffing the run has been Nebraska’s most consistent struggle over 10 years. It was. It is. The Husker fortunes are likely tied, in part, to Nebraska somehow changing it.
Nebraska’s offense may have their work cut out for them this week against the Iowa defense, Lubick said. The Hawkeyes allow just 16 points per game, ranking third in the Big Ten. But among the inconsistencies for the Husker offense lies a bigger question: Who will start at quarterback? That ultimately comes down to Scott Frost, Lubick said, and the decision hasn’t been made yet.
Truth be told, the Huskers’ woes in such situations have begun before third down, the money down. Opposing offenses are picking up small chunks on first and second downs, avoiding third-and-long and working with third-and-manageable, which opens the playbook and puts a lot of stress on a defense.
Look at Miami, Tennessee and Michigan, Farrell says. Like Nebraska, those programs also have fan bases that have unrealistic expectations. The difference, of course, is those schools do have strong recruiting bases. Then there’s this: There exists an ongoing national recruiting conversation that also applies (loosely) to Nebraska.
