Stream of Sexual Assault Accusations Put Spotlight on A Complex Issue

With all the sexual assault allegations coming out in the news, a spotlight is being put on the problem of sexual assaults in America.

Shelly Debuhr is a victim advocate for Voices of Hope Nebraska and says if someone comes out to you as a victim, there a are a few critical things you need to keep in mind.

1. Believe them. Not believing someone alleging sexual assault out of hand can cause lasting emotional trauma on top of the trauma already present.

2. Don’t pester them with a ton of questions. Letting victims handle the flow of information in their own time can do much to give them a needed sense of control.

3. Connect them with the resources they need. Professionals can be found from many different sources that can help victims work through the trauma of an incident.

Debuhr says the psychology of  a sexual assault victim can be diverse and complex, and depends on many different factors, like the relationship between the victim and the assaulter. Debuhr says what many may not know is that sexual assault are often close with their victims, usually friends or colleagues. many may not take into account how this impacts a victims mental state.

Debuhr says if someone comes out as an victim and you don’t know what to do, connect them with professionals like those available at Voices of Hope. They can be contacted at 402-475-7273 or you can visit their offices on the 2500 block of N st.
