Still No Blackshirts for the Husker Defense

Defensive Coordinator Erik Chinander spoke to the media after Tuesday’s practice this morning. The defensive players walked off the practice field wearing yellow-gold practice jerseys that Chinander affectionately referred to as “the killer bees.”

It’s an old Husker tradition dating back to when the blackshirts were first introduced. The players not awarded a blackshirt were to wear the faded yellow jerseys. “Some of these guys are already saying I want to get out of this thing and get into the black [jerseys],” Chinander said.

The extra motivation could become a key factor in this one. Colorado will be coming into Lincoln with a potent offense. They demolished Colorado State last weekend 45-13 in a pass heavy attack that will present problems for an inexperienced defensive unit, especially in the secondary.

What makes matters worse for Nebraska, is that their game against Akron was cancelled due to severe weather. Without a game under their belt, the Huskers will have their hands full against their old Big Eight/Big 12 foe.

Chinander acknowledged that “playing in front 90,000 plus fans instead of playing on the indoor or outdoor practice field” is a whole other beast, however he isn’t worried. “I don’t think a little adversity is going to hurt this team at all. In fact, I think it’s going to make us better.”

You can catch the game on 1400 KLIN this Saturday. Pregame coverage begins at 7:30.
