Spence Shines in Big Ten Opener

Lincoln – Sophomore Emma Spence claimed three event titles to highlight Nebraska women’s gymnastics conference opener against Maryland. Spence claimed the vault, floor and all-around titles, but the Terrapins outscored the Huskers, 195.875-195.325.

Rotation One

NU started rotation one on vault, tallying a team score of 49.025. Spence led the Huskers with a career-best 9.900, claiming the event title. Martina Comin followed with a 9.850 while Kinsey Davis earned a 9.825. Katie Kuenemann notched a 9.775, and Sophia McClelland added a 9.675. Katelyn Barth made her Husker debut, scoring a 9.600. 

Maryland started the meet on uneven bars, earning a team score of 48.850. Elizabeth Debarberie and Victoria Gatzendorfer both led the Terrapins with a 9.800. 

Rotation Two

Nebraska earned a 48.850 during the second rotation on uneven bars. Spence led NU with a 9.775 followed by Clara Colombo with a 9.750. McClelland added a 9.650 while Genesis Gibson earned a 9.600. Davis followed with a 9.575, and Emma Simpton rounded out the rotation with a 9.550. 

The Terrapins competed on vault, notching a 49.125. Emma Silberman led Maryland on vault with a score of 9.875. 

Rotation Three

Colombo led the Huskers on beam, scoring a 9.850 to match her career best. Spence followed with a 9.825. Simpton and Bacskay each tallied a 9.775. McClelland earned a 9.650 while Allie Gard finished with a 9.675. NU finished with a team score of 48.900. 

Reese McClure led Maryland on floor during the rotation three with a score of 49.000. 

Rotation Four

The Huskers finished the meet on floor, notching a team score of 49.050. Spence led the way with a 9.900, matching her career best and winning the event title. McClelland followed with a 9.850 while Kylie Piringer added a 9.800. Kuenemann tallied a 9.775 while Comin had a 9.725. Halle Rourke rounded out the rotation with a 9.400. 

Maryland finished the meet on balance beam, scoring a 48.900. Maddie Komoroski led the Terrapins with a 9.875. 

The Terrapins claimed the meet victory with a 195.875 while NU finished with a team score of 195.325. 

All-Around

Spence claimed the all-around title with a career-high score of 39.400. Maryland’s Emma Silberman finished in second with a 39.000. McClelland added a 38.850 to finish in third.

The Huskers continue Big Ten competition, traveling to Champaign to take on Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 28. NU will face the Fighting Illini at 2 p.m. (CT) and the meet will be streamed live on BTN+ (subscription required).
