Reviewing the 2019 Minnesota Golden Gophers

The Gophers 5-0 record is impressive. How they won their first four games isn’t quite so impressive.

Nebraska will be facing the undefeated Minnesota Golden Gophers this Saturday night…but if not for some fourth quarter magic, the Gophers just as easily have a losing record in 2019. In the season opener, Minnesota trailed Division 1-AA South Dakota State until Mohammed Ibrahim’s touchdown run with under six minutes left in the game. The Jackrabbits outgained the Gophers 367-308 and had six more first downs that Minnesota. A week later against Fresno State, the Gophers tied the game with a 20 yard touchdown pass from Tanner Morgan to Chris Autman-Bell on 4th and 13 with 46 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, with the Gophers hanging on for a 38-35 double-overtime victory.

Against Georgia Southern, Tyler Johnson’s game-winning touchdown catch with 13 seconds left thwarted the Eagles upset bid. Georgia Southern took a fourth quarter lead by returning a blocked field goal 77 yards for a touchdown followed by a 44 yard fumble return for a touchdown five plays later. Entering conference play, Minnesota broke out to a comfortable 28-10 over Purdue halftime lead, but then had to sweat out a fourth quarter comeback by the Boilermakers, thanks to a somewhat controversial (at least to Purdue fans) pass interference penalty against Purdue that helped allow the Gophers to run out the clock.
