NU Ends First Day of Regionals 1-1



Rochester, N.Y. – The Nebraska bowling team ended the first day of the regional tournament with a 1-1 record as the Huskers lost in the first round against Wilmington but came back to defeat Sacred Heart in the second match of the day.

The Huskers started the day with their first mega-match against Wilmington, falling 2-0. In the traditional-style match, Gwen Maeha led the team with eight-consecutive strikes and a score of 255. Crystal Elliott (181), Kayla Verstraete (167), Michelle Guarro (158) and Cassidy Ray (135) followed behind. To start the baker-style match, NU fell in the first game (207-174), but bounced back in the second game and won by a score of 214-184. The bowlers battled in game three (209-199), but lost game four (223-216). With a one point difference overall, Nebraska fell in the final game (183-156) and moved on to the loser’s bracket.

In Nebraska’s second mega-match of the day, the Huskers faced No. 16 Sacred Heart. In round one, Nebraska opted to put Kendyl Hofmeister in the lineup and took its first point in a traditional-style match by a score of 1,099-946. Elliott led the Huskers with 12 strikes, scoring 279. She was followed by Maeha with 217, Hofmeister with 207, and Verstraete with 204. Ray rounded out the Huskers with 192. Nebraska moved into baker-style play with the same lineup and won the second point by a score of 1,016-976. The bowlers took the first two games (199-182, 216-182), but fell in the third game (221-194). NU fought back and claimed game four by a score of 202-200. In the final game, Alexis Buchert stepped in to throw the last ball and helped the team win the mega-match with a final game score of 205-191.

Nebraska will return to the lanes tomorrow to face off against Wilmington at 9:00 am ET.
