Not since 2002 has the Nebraska Spirit Squad been allowed to implement stunting and tumbling into their routines. According to an NU press release, the Nebraska Athletic Department has approved the use of basic stunting and tumbling to work into their game day routines for the 2019-20 season.

“Since I arrived at Nebraska nearly 18 months ago, I have consistently heard from fans and our cheer squad alumni about the importance of allowing our spirit squad to add more elements to their routines,” Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos said in the release. “Our first priority is the safety of our spirit squad members and our staff has worked diligently on a plan to re-introduce stunting and tumbling, with safety at the forefront.”

The new policy will allow for tumbling and basic one-high stunting, but basket tosses and multi-level pyramid stunting are still banned.

According to the Daily Nebraskan, an injury to a spirit squad member in 1996 that resulted in a broken neck and sparked a lawsuit was the catalyst for the ban, which was instituted in 2002 by then athletic director Bill Byrne.
