News and Notes from the Latest Husker Practice

It’s been a busy week at Nebraska. With the state in a buzz over the hire of Fred Hoiberg, Scott Frost couldn’t help but get caught up in the excitement himself. Frost was at Hoiberg’s introductory press conference on Tuesday, which was held in the same room Frost was first introduced as Nebraska’s head football coach. The identical setting isn’t the only similarity between the two coaches’ situations. Both have been tasked with resurrecting programs on the brink of irrelevance.

“We’re going to be on a similar tract, trying to get these two programs to where they belong, and I can’t wait to watch him work,” Frost said.

Wednesday morning, Frost was impressed with what he saw.

“I think today is probably overall, their best practice I’ve been a part of at Nebraska,” Frost said, citing that there were few errors made. Frost also noted that starting QB Adrian Martinez had his best practice yet, and that the quarterbacks as a whole are “light years ahead” of where they were last year.

However, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander was much less enthusiastic about what he saw from his squad. “We lost the competition period. We lost by one,” Chinander said. “We came out, got punched in the mouth a little bit, which was awesome for us… a little slice of humble pie. I don’t think they were ready to play. I didn’t like their attitude.”

It’s crunch time now for the Huskers. Some players have hit their stride, while others still need to be more consistent before the spring game on April 13th.

In other news and notes:

*A few Huskers didn’t practice Wednesday. Maurice Washington was not available, as he continues to work through his ongoing legal process. Cam’ron Jones also did not practice as he has some academic issues he needs to work through, and J.D. Spielman is “a little banged up” according to Frost.

*Chinander is mostly working with the outside linebackers in practice, due to assistant coach Jovan Dewitt’s battle with cancer. Chinander also said Collin Miller, Nick Henrich, and Will Honas have all been performing well at the inside linebacker spot.

*Frost said that Alex Davis has been making the plays in spring practice this year that he wasn’t able to last fall.
