Nebrasketball: Bret Porter Enters Transfer Portal

It is already the offseason for the Nebraska Cornhuskers Men’s Basketball team, and with that will come roster changes. The first of that news came on Friday of last week when redshirt freshman forward Bret Porter announced he would be leaving the program and entering his name in the transfer portal.

Porter was a native Nebraskan who played at Millard North in high school. He was a member of head coach Fred Hoiberg’s first incoming class in 2019 where he redshirted and played on the scout team.

As a redshirt freshman this past season, Porter saw action in seven total games, four of which included the conference season. Those games included McNeese State, North Dakota State, Creighton, Maryland, Illinois, Rutgers, and Iowa. In those games he saw a total of 10 minutes that included 1 rebound (McNeese St), 1 assist (Iowa), 1 block (ND State), 1 turnover (Creighton), and 1 personal foul (McNeese St). He did not attempt a shot on the season, and his game high for minutes were 3 against McNeese State.

In high school, Porter was a three-year starter at Millard North, where he tallied 701 points, 317 rebounds, and 177 assists during his high school career. He suffered an ACL injury in the summer of 2018 and returned during his senior season to average 6.2 points on 52 percent shooting and 4.4 rebounds per game in 21 games.

Bret Porter was also Nebraska’s first four-generation athlete, as his father (Budge, 1975) grandfather (Mort, 1943, 1946-47) and great grandfather (Grove, 1913-15) all played football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Porter posted the following statement announcing his decision to his social media accounts:

First, I would like to start off with saying that playing for Nebraska and wearing that “N” across my chest was a dream of mine since I was a little kid. Being able to carry on the Porter name for a fourth generation is something I will never forget. Coach Hoiberg, and staff gave me that opportunity and I am eternally grateful that I was able to learn and better myself on and off the court from the best. I have created relationships with my coaches and my teammates that will last a lifetime. I’ll love Nebraska until the day I die, and of course this wasn’t an easy decision. With all that being said, I am entering my name into the transfer portal and will be using my four years of eligibility left somewhere else. I look forward to this next chapter in my life. The Huskers’ season ended last week on Wednesday with a loss to Penn State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska’s players will begin going through meetings with head coach Fred Hoiberg and the Husker staff this coming week where many will then assess their roles with the team going forward.
