Nebraska men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg won the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award Thursday, another honor at the end of NU’s most successful season in a decade.
Nebraska went 23-11, improving from 2022-23 by seven wins and advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2014. In March, Hoiberg, in his fifth season at NU, was named Big Ten co-Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Purdue’s Matt Painter. Ahead of the NCAA tournament, he signed a contract extension, keeping him at Nebraska through 2029.

The national coach of the year award is determined by a 10-person committee of current and former coaches and two staff members of collegeinsider.com. The last Nebraska coach to win the honor was Tim Miles in 2014.
“This is a hard business, and we’ve been through a lot of things over the last five years here at the University of Nebraska,” Hoiberg said in a video posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. “But we’ve never lost our mission. We’ve always tried to come in with an unbelievable work ethic with our staff and go out there and really stick to the core values of what’s important with this program and try to build a winner.”
