Nebraska men’s golfer Gentry Scheve delivered an impressive performance at the Omaha Country Club, shooting a 69 (-2) to tie for third in local qualifying on Wednesday, May 8. His strong showing secured one of four coveted spots in the final U.S. Open qualifying rounds, scheduled between May 20 and June 3.

A senior from Emporia, Kansas, Scheve will compete at one of 13 final qualifying locations across the United States. His aim is to clinch a place in the prestigious U.S. Open, to be held at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina from June 13-16.

The local qualifier at Omaha was bustling with competitors, with 78 golfers vying for advancement. Scheve’s score was bested only by Alex and Carson Schaake, who each carded a 67 (-4). He tied with Nate Vontz and was closely followed by former Husker Ryan Nietfeldt, who secured an alternate spot with a 70 (-1).

Other Huskers also showed strong performances, with Evan McDermott, Evan Myers, and Grant Jabenis all finishing in the top 15, scoring 73, 74, and 74, respectively. Nebraska’s Head Coach Judd Cornell finished tied for 19th with a 75.

Scheve’s next challenge will be at one of the ten U.S. sites for final qualifying, including notable venues such as the Dallas Athletic Club on May 20, and others like Lake Merced Golf Club in California and The Bear’s Club in Florida, all hosting on June 3.

As Scheve prepares to represent Nebraska on this national stage, his progression through the rigorous U.S. Open qualifying process highlights his skill and determination in the competitive world of golf.
