Nebraska Falls 4-0 to Northwestern

The Nebraska women’s soccer team suffered a 4-0 setback at Northwestern on Sunday afternoon in the regular-season road finale. The Huskers (1-4-2) close the year 0-3-1 on the road as they look to bounce back with success on home turf next week.

The Huskers made a late offensive push in the second half, earning all three of their corner kicks in the final 25 minutes of the game. A free kick opportunity came for Nebraska in the final five minutes, however NU could not capitalize on the chance and was ultimately unable to cut into the Wildcat lead.

Despite the four-goal deficit, the Husker backline made critical stops throughout the match. Ashley Zugay and Grace Brown eliminated a Northwestern offensive fury in the 40th minute as the entire defense shot down a Wildcat attack by forcing the team offsides to keep the game at 2-0. Makinzie Short made one save on the day with seven shots faced.

Gwen Lane and Natalie Cooke connected on multiple opportunities, including a promising look in the 21st minute and another in the 49th minute, but the Wildcat defense put a stop to Nebraska’s chances. Cooke and Dakota Chan recorded the Huskers two shots of the game.

The Northwestern offensive success started with a goal in the 11th minute from Regan Steigleder. Aurea Martin and Madi Kennel added the Wildcats next two goals of the first half and Martin recorded the team’s final goal in the second half.

Eighteen players took the pitch for Nebraska with Short, Olivia Brown and Grace Brown playing all 90 minutes for the Huskers. Freshman Elana Webber made her Husker debut in the game.

Nebraska takes the pitch next against Rutgers on Thursday, March 25. The game starts the Husker’s final homestand of the year to close out the regular season.
