Nebraska Defeats Indiana, 5-2 – University of Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 47 ranked Nebraska men’s tennis team (11-7, 3-2 Big Ten) defeated the No. 75 Indiana men’s tennis team (12-9, 1-3 Big Ten) 5-2 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on Friday night.

The Huskers got off to a strong start in doubles play, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. Indiana grabbed the first doubles match on Court 1 with Patrick Fletchall and Ilya Tiraspolsky defeating William Gleason and Leo Linquet 6-4. NU bounced back though, with Calvin Mueller and Lars Johann picking up the win on Court 2 6-4 over Sam Landau and Luc Boulier.

The Huskers clinched the point on Court 3 with Roni Hietaranta and Shunya Maruyama defeating Luka Vukovic and Ekansh Kumar 6-4.

The Huskers continued that strong play into singles action with Nic Wiedenhorn defeating Ekansh Kumar 6-2, 7-5 on Court 6 to go up 2-0. Hietaranta followed with a match win of his own on Court 1, defeating Fletchall 6-4, 6-4 to get the Huskers within one point of the team victory.

Linquet clinched the win for the Huskers with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Vukovic on Court 2.

The teams agreed to play out the remaining matches, with Indiana picking up a point on Court 4 with Tiraspolsky beating Johann 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. Nebraska moved the lead to 5-1 with Mueller winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Court 5 over Jagger Saylor. The final point of the night went to Indiana as Landau defeated Maruyama 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (13-11).

The match brought out 133 fans, the largest crowd of the season for the Big Red. The Huskers’ final home match of the season is on Sunday, April 9, against Purdue. Nebraska will also be honoring graduate student William Gleason, who will play in his final home match as a Husker.
