Nebraska Bowling Secures Fourth Place at Prairie View A&M Invite

The Nebraska bowling team has made a notable showing at the Prairie View A&M Invite, securing the fourth-place seed after a challenging day. Despite facing stiff competition, the team’s overall record stands at 4-6, with a total pinfall of 10,174.

Kayla Verstraete emerged as the standout performer for the Huskers, leading the team with an impressive total of 1,193 pins on Saturday, marking the highest individual total for the day.

The Huskers’ journey through the tournament was a testament to their resilience and skill. They faced a tough start against No. 3 Youngstown State, falling short despite solid performances from Verstraete, who rolled a 247, and Brenna Hartzler, who contributed a 206. The team’s efforts were rounded out by Alexis Buchert with a 179, Jillian Martin at 172, and Lani Breedlove scoring 141.

Despite the initial setback, Nebraska bounced back in remarkable fashion against No. 2 Vanderbilt. The team saw all members scoring over 200 pins, highlighted by Hartzler’s 270 and Martin’s 269, both personal tournament highs. The Buchert sisters, Alexis and Desiree, contributed significantly with scores of 245 and 205, respectively, aiding the Huskers in a decisive 1200-929 victory.

In their third match, Nebraska faced No. 6 Arkansas State. Once again, Verstraete led the team with 235 pins, supported by Hartzler and Martin, who continued their strong performances. However, the match concluded in a 966-1104 loss for the Huskers.

The fourth match saw Nebraska take on the host team, Prairie View A&M. Verstraete dominated the match with 264 pins, while Breedlove shot a personal best of 239. Martin and Hartzler also maintained their consistency, contributing significantly to the Huskers’ 1096-919 win.

The final match of the day pitted Nebraska against top-ranked Jacksonville State. Breedlove led the Huskers with a score of 245, closely followed by Verstraete and Martin. Despite their valiant efforts, the Huskers narrowly missed a victory, ending the match with a score of 1086-1095.

Looking ahead, the Huskers will continue their tournament journey on Sunday, starting with a traditional match followed by two rounds of best 4-of-7 baker games to determine final placements and awards.
