Nebraska baseball rolls South Alabama to win series

Luke Mullin and Amie Just break down Nebraska men’s basketball’s win over Wisconsin and give their thoughts on what it means for Fred Hoiberg’s future at Nebraska.

No late drama this time. And just like that, Nebraska baseball is on a winning streak.

The Huskers rolled past South Alabama 15-3 on Saturday afternoon in a game they never trailed. The offense capitalized on a flurry of errors while pounding out 14 hits. Starting pitcher Jace Kaminska and two relievers took care of the rest as the Jags never threatened.

Nebraska (2-3-1) goes for the sweep at Stanky Field in Mobile, Alabama, on Sunday at 1 p.m.

“You just try to be as consistent as you can be,” NU coach Will Bolt said on the Huskers Radio Network. “What I’ve tried to ask of this group is just get a little better each day, and I think the results will start to end up taking care of themselves. We’re doing that. We’ve gotten a little bit better each and every time we’ve taken the field.”

Brice Matthews came a triple shy of the cycle — capping the blowout with a three-run blast in the seventh inning — while Max Anderson also enjoyed a three-hit day. NU roughed up Jaguars freshman left-hander Gehrig Conard in his second career start for five runs (one earned) in four frames.

A pair of errors at third base ignited the first Nebraska rally in a four-run second inning. RBI hits from Gabe Swansen and Anderson, and a sac fly from Dylan Carey highlighted the scoring.

South Alabama (4-3) recouped a run in the bottom half via a walk and a pair of two-out singles, but didn’t get any closer. An error allowed another unearned Nebraska score in the third. Will Walsh’s towering two-run homer to left in the fifth — the first collegiate long ball for the redshirt sophomore — extended the lead to 7-1 to touch off the rout.

A Carey RBI hit in the sixth, a six-run seventh and a wild-pitch run in the ninth accounted for the rest. Four walks, three plunked batters and the fielding miscues made for crowded Nebraska basepaths for most of the steamy afternoon.

Kaminska went 5 1/3 innings and 91 pitches, striking out four while generally filling the strike zone. A pair of runs in the fifth — coming on a single and two doubles that brought the hosts within 7-3 — was the most damage against him.

Jackson Brockett (2 2/3 innings) and JC Gutierrez (one) logged scoreless appearances the rest of the way.

Bolt said he was most proud of the way NU finished, continuing to make South Alabama pay for mistakes while the bullpen kept tossing zeros. The collective mindset of the squad, he said, has been strong all season. Now the results are beginning to show.

“You have a chance to let your focus kind of dwindle a little bit at times,” Bolt said. “I thought we finished that game off amazingly well.”
