Moreno and Wiedenhorn Make Semifinals in Pac Coast Championships

La Jolla, Calif. – The Nebraska men’s tennis team finished play in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships after Victor Moreno Lozano and Nic Wiedenhorn advanced all the way to the semifinals. They matched up with UCLA’s Stefan Leustian and Bryce Pereira in the semifinals, but ultimately lost 6-3, 7-5.

The duo finished the tournament with a 5-1 record and even knocked off a No. 5 preliminary seed in the form of Tyler Browne and Nicholas Brunner, 4-2, 4-5(1), [7-3]. Wiedenhorn and Lozano rolled through the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, defeating the preliminary No. 2 and No. 9 seeds in consecutive sets. It was the second time this season that Lozano has advanced to the semifinals of a major doubles tournament, as him and Dario Huber made the semifinals in the fall at the ITA Regionals. Following this weekend, the team now has a record of 8-4 on the spring.

Shunya Maruyama and Huber had a spectacular run as they didn’t drop a set throughout the first three rounds of the tournament. However, in the Round of 16 they faced off against Arthur Fery and Alaxandre Rotsaert, before falling short in three sets after taking the first, 6-4. The tandem is now 4-2 on the spring season after winning three matches this weekend.

Patrick Cacciatore and Calvin Mueller had a nice run, advancing to the Round of 32 after winning their first two matches in consecutive sets. It was a narrow 7-5 loss in the tiebreaker to Makk Peter and Lodewijk Weststrate that eliminated the duo after splitting the first two sets. Cacciatore and Mueller now hold a 3-3 record in the spring.

William Gleason and Chester Wickwire advanced out of the first round, but ultimately fell short to Juan Jose Bianchi and Max Motlagh in the Round of 64. The duo is now 2-1 in spring duals.

Up next, the Huskers will travel to the Big Apple as they take on Cornell this Saturday, March 12 at Noon at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, New York.
