Meyer Leads Huskers in Arizona



Branden Meyer fired a two-under-par 70 in the final round of the Saguaro Amateur to lead a contingent a five Husker men’s golfers at the three-day tournament on Monday, Jan. 4.

Meyer, a senior from Gilbert, Ariz., finished the 54-hole event with a score of 218 (+2) to tie for 33rd in a 112-player field. Meyer opened with a 72 (E) on Saturday, before adding a second-round 76 on Sunday. He closed the tournament strong with his final-round 70 (-2).

Husker teammate Tristan Nelko finished right behind Meyer in a tie for 40th at 219 (+3) after producing consistent rounds of 74-73-72 over the three-day event. 

Sophomore Will Marshall also produced a highlight for the Huskers with his second-round 68 (-4) on Sunday, which was good for the best round by a Husker golfer in the tournament. Marshall’s second round also tied for the eighth-best round by any golfer in the tournament. He finished in a tie for 74th overall at 226 (+10).

Freshman Reed Malleck matched Meyer with an even-par 72 in the opening round, before adding rounds of 79 and 77 to close in a tie for 80th at 228 (+12). Senior Daniel Pearson rounded out the Nebraska contingent with a 234 (74-80-80).
