Matt Rhule talks Trev Alberts and the future of Nebraska athletics

Before he took any questions about football, Matt Rhule had thoughts on Trev Alberts and the future of Nebraska Athletics. More than 12 minutes’ worth of them in his most lengthy opening statement as the Husker coach.

Rhule — hired 16 months earlier by Alberts and also-departed NU president Ted Carter — spoke passionately about his former boss and the positive state of Nebraska athletics. Alberts called Rhule to tell him the news last week while the coach was overseas playing golf with his son. Yes, Rhule was surprised.

“This is an opportunity for us to look at everything within our athletic department, maybe even within our university, and how we can be better,” Rhule said. “Because this is an amazing place.”

Rhule called Alberts and his wife, Angela, “class, class people” and the business “hard” as people move from job to job. The vision Alberts had about the future of college athletics — including potential revenue sharing with players — may already be closer to reality than the coach thought even a year ago.

“He’s left the place better than he’s found it,” Rhule said of Alberts.

What does Nebraska need in its next leader? A “doer,” Rhule said. Someone who will get things done. Rhule said he would be “grateful” to give feedback in the search for the next AD, as would any other coach on campus.

“We have to be unabashed in our desire to be the best,” Rhule said. “We cannot work about optics. We cannot worry about what people say. The way you win in college athletics is you have to invest.”

Rhule said a variety of leaders reached out to him including interim Nebraska president Chris Kabourek and Gov. Jim Pillen. The coach said national media members have also touched base asking about his contract details.

The coach isn’t planning to go anywhere. His son is enrolling at the school. His wife is opening a business in south Lincoln.

“I’m here and I’m all in,” Rhule said. “…We’re not going anywhere unless you guys kick us out.”
