Linebacker Willie Hampton announces decision to transfer from Nebraska

Linebacker Willie Hampton announced on social media Tuesday night that he has received his scholarship release from Nebraska and will transfer.

“I would like to thank Coach Riley, Coach Bray and the rest of the staff for giving me the opportunity to play here at the University of Nebraska and helping me improve as a player,” Hampton said in a written statement. “Also, I would like to thank Coach Frost and Coach Dewitt and the rest of the staff for helping me improve as a player also. To my brothers on the team, we have built a bond that would last a lifetime. I thank ya’ll for making my time in Lincoln something to remember. Also helping me grow as a player. All of you will be missed. I wish ya’ll good luck this year.”

Hampton is a redshirt freshman, and is the eighth player to announce his departure from the Huskers this spring. He had three tackles for the White Squad in last month’s spring game.

Hampton is the second linebacker from the 2017 class to transfer. Fellow inside backer Andrew Ward announced he was leaving on May 19th.
