Just rewatched the 2016 Nebraska-Oregon game. Our talent upgrade today compared to then is significant.

The 2016 squad has some memorable favorite players of mine like Tommy Armstrong, Westerkamp, and Nate Gerry. But looking back, it’s really striking to me how many *glaring* holes we had on the depth chart.

Defense:
– we started Ross Dzuris at DE (this guy had a great stache but was not a D1 caliber player). Wisconsin meanwhile had T.J. Watt and Michigan had Taco Charlton. Our solid secondary with Kalu, Chris Jones, Kieron Williams, and Gerry helped take our eyes away from how nonexistent our pass rush was. Kevin Maurice started at DT

-LB play was miserable, especially in coverage. Guys like Josh Banderas, Marcus Newby, and Dedrick Young played hard but were not talented or athletic enough to keep up in coverage

Offense:
-On the OL, Dylan Utter and Cole Conrad were liable. Jerald Foster was only a sophomore

-as much as I loved Cethan Carter, our TE room now and next year looks 2x as good with fantastic depth

-Behind Tommy, Ryker Fyfe was the guy. Now we have 3 4* QB’s

I mean no harm in the way I talk about some of these guys, I love every single Husker who ever played at Nebraska. But the talent we have now on both sides of the ball is a massive upgrade. It’s not there yet but it’s much improved. Frost and his staff’s recruiting combined with an *actual* strength + conditioning program will pay off soon enough. We used to never land players like Wandale or Fidone or Ty Robinson. Not to mention real player development and outstanding coaching should make this our best and deepest OL in what, 20 years? With real speed on the outside and playmakers in the backfield. GBR
