The Nebraska men’s golf team will face an exciting spring schedule that will take the Huskers from coast-to-coast to face some of the nation’s best teams on outstanding courses, Head Coach Mark Hankins announced on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
“We are excited about the schedule and we will be ready to get back out on the course this spring,” Hankins said. “Our schedule is pretty complete for a one-semester schedule with a good mix of match play and stroke play, East Coast and West Coast, all to prepare us for our Big Ten Championships and NCAA Regionals.”
Nebraska’s spring campaign will begin on Jan. 30 at the Big Red Alumni Invite at TPC Sawgrass. The Huskers will use the event in Jacksonville, Fla., to connect with former Huskers while also preparing for the Big Ten Match Play Championship (Feb. 5-6) at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla., the following weekend. Nebraska will be shooting for a third consecutive semifinal and top-four finish at the Big Ten Match Play.
The Huskers will experience the coast-to-coast feel of their schedule three weeks later when they head to San Diego to compete at the Challenge at Rancho. The one-day event at the Rancho Santa Fe Country Club will help the Big Red prepare for a primarily West Coast field at the Lamkin San Diego Classic (March 8-9) at the San Diego Country Club.
In April, the Huskers head to Texas to compete at the Aggie Invitational (April 9-11) at the Traditions Golf Club on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station. The trip to Aggieland is Nebraska’s first appearance at the tournament that traditionally boasts a strong Texas and national field. Back-to-back weekends brings the Huskers home to host the 12-team, Git-R-Done Husker Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln (April 17-18).
“We are excited about hosting a solid field this year at Firethorn,” Hankins said. “The golf course is a great challenge, the staff and ownership are terrific to work with, and the golf course has been in superior shape this past year. We have worked hard to put together the best and biggest field since we started the tournament a couple years ago.”
Nebraska will conclude regular-season play at the Kepler Invitational on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State (April 24-25), before finishing off the regular season at the Big Ten Conference Championships at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind. (April 30-May 2).
“Our schedule is spread out over the entire spring semester allowing us to show up each and every week ready to compete if we want to move on to NCAA Regionals,” Hankins said. “Our guys are working hard to change our trajectory, individually and as a team. I’m proud of our progress, as most of them have continued to compete individually through the offseason in preparation for the spring. They have shown confidence in each other, and that will result in success and consistent showings throughout the season.”
Nebraska returns redshirt senior Tanner Owen and four talented juniors who put together strong individual fall campaigns led by Mark Foelbaek, Branden Meyer, Tom Westenberger and Caleb Badura. The Huskers also saw solid performances from their talented freshmen led by Jack Lundin and Gentry Scheve. The Huskers also return senior Daniel Pearson, junior Tristan Nelko, sophomore Will Marshall, and freshmen Will Harding, Jeremy Sisson and Reed Malleck.
