The Nebraska men’s tennis team is coming off its second conference win last weekend against No. 53 Illinois, 4-2. The Huskers will travel to Indiana for a pair of Big Ten matches this weekend as they battle Purdue and Indiana.

Scouting Purdue

• The Boilermakers enter Saturday’s matchup with a 9-10 record, having won six of eight at home this season. They boast a 2-3 conference record.

• Purdue has no players on the ITA Top-125 Singles Rankings List and no teams on the ITA Top-90 Doubles Rankings List.

• Athell Bennett holds a 9-6 spring record, with all of his matches coming in the No. 1 spot. Bennett and Gabriele Brancatelli are 2-4 in doubles and have competed primarily in the No. 2 spot.

Scouting Indiana

• The Hoosiers enter Sunday’s matchup with a 5-13 record but have dropped their last eight matchups. They also are winless in conference play with an 0-5 conference record.

• Indiana has no players on the ITA Top-125 Singles Rankings List and no teams on the ITA Top-90 Doubles Rankings List.

• Patrick Fletchall is the only Hoosier with a winning record in singles, boasting a 12-11 mark primarily in the No. 2 spot. 

• In doubles, Ilya Tiraspolsky and Fletchall have an 8-4 record in the spring alongside Michael Andre and Luka Vukovic who are 8-3.

Series History

• The Boilermakers hold a 8-3 advantage over the Huskers, taking the last five matches. 

• Nebraska is 2-8 against Indiana, with this match marking the first meeting in Bloomington since April 13, 2019.

Up Next

• The Huskers will return to the Dillon Tennis Center for the final two home games of the campaign against Penn State on April 22 at 4 p.m. CT and Ohio State on April 24 at Noon CT.

 

Hietaranta Continues Strong 2022 Campaign

• Roni Hietaranta started the year off strong, winning his first six singles matches to begin the season with a 6-0 record. Dating back to the fall, he now has 15 total singles wins which marks the most on the team thus far.

• On Jan. 25, Hietaranta was named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week after singles wins over Baylor and Oklahoma. He knocked off the No. 54 ranked singles competitor in the nation, defeating Oklahoma’s Jordan Hasson, 6-4, 7-5. The Lappeenranta, Finland native also defeated Baylor’s Cole Gromley in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-3.

• Three weeks ago, Hietaranta rallied back from a 4-2 hole to knock off Wichita State’s Orel Ovil and clinch the victory for the Huskers. He won the singles match against Ovil 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Last weekend, he knocked off Princeton’s Filippos Astreinidis in consecutive sets to push his spring record to 7-3.

• Following a short injury stint, he returned against UCF and won in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-3, to give him eight wins in the spring.

• He currently holds a 2-3 conference record and has victories in matches against Michigan State and Northwestern. He has an 11-6 singles record in the spring.

Maruyama and Huber Rise In The ITA Rankings

• Dario Huber and Shunya Maruyama have won six of their last seven doubles matches, including wins over Michigan, Illinois and Northwestern.

• The jumped up 45 spots this week in the ITA Top-90 Doubles Rankings to the No. 40 slot after going 2-0 this past weekend against two ranked teams.

• In singles play, Maruyama is tied for second on the Huskers with 14 total wins, and he holds a 7-9 spring record. Four of his wins have come in the No. 3 and No. 6 spots.

• He has been victorious in six of his last 12 completed matches, including singles victories in matches against UCF and Cornell.

Lozano Holding Down Back Half Of Lineup

• Victor Moreno Lozano ranks second on the Huskers with nine spring wins, as he holds a 9-5 spring record. Eight of his wins have come in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.

• He has been victorious in eight of his last 12 completed matches, including singles victories in matches against Oregon, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

• He has also competed with Nic Wiedenhorn in the No. 1 spot for doubles, notching back-to-back wins in completed matches against Michigan State and Wisconsin.
