Huskers Travel to New Mexico for Troy Cox Classic



The Nebraska softball team (5-5) travels to Las Cruces, N.M., for the Troy Cox Classic this weekend, Feb. 24-26. The Huskers face four teams including No. 4 Oklahoma State while playing a total of five games. 

 

NU will open with No. 4 Oklahoma State (8-1) on Friday, Feb. 24. The game is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. (CT). This marks the second time the Huskers and the Cowgirls will meet this season. 

 

Following game one, Nebraska will face New Mexico State (5-4). First pitch will be at approximately 5:30 p.m. (CT). The game against the Aggies can be streamed live at wacinternational.tv/nmsu. 

 

On Saturday, the Big Red will take on CSU Bakersfield (2-8) at 5:30 p.m. (CT). Nebraska will take on New Mexico (3-5) following the completion of game at approximately 7:30 p.m. (CT).

 

The Huskers will finish the weekend on Sunday with a game against the Lobos at 10 a.m. (CT).

Nebraska By the Numbers

  • The Huskers lead the Big Ten in shutouts with four and are ranked 12th in the NCAA. 
  • Billie Andrews leads the Big Ten Conference with five homers this season and has the second-most in the NCAA.
  • Courtney Wallace finished the first weekend of the season with a 0.00 ERA, three shutouts and three victories. Wallace is the lone pitcher in the NCAA who tallied three shutouts in the first weekend. 
  • Nebraska returns 11 players from a 2022 squad that claimed the Big Ten Tournament title and reached the NCAA Tournament. 
  • The Huskers 2023 team features seven newcomers including six freshmen and one transfer. 

Opponents by the Numbers

  • No. 4 Oklahoma State ranks 15th in the NCAA with a team batting average of .357. 
  • Kelly Maxwell is third nationally in strikeouts per seven innings, averaging 13.1, for the Cowgirls.
  • New Mexico State is averaging 1.44 home runs per game which ranks 11th in the nation.
  • Kendal Lunar is second in the nation in doubles this season as she has tallied six for the Aggies.  
  • Brianna Sanchez is ranked first in the Big West and 24th in the NCAA for innings pitched with 34.1 innings for CSU Bakersfield. 
  • New Mexico has tallied three triples including two from Rachel Hathoot. She ranks first in the Mountain West and third in the nation. 

Husker Quick Hits

  • NU will play its fifth game against a top-10 team this season when they face No. 4 Oklahoma State this weekend. The last time time Nebraska beat a top-10 team was in 2018 when the Huskers defeated No. 6 Texas A&M, 6-3. 
  • After Billie Andrews three home runs last weekend, she is now tied for eighth all-time in Nebraska history in career homers. 
  • Andrews is one of 12 returning players in the NCAA who hit 20 or more home runs last season. 
  • Mya Felder is the only returning Big Ten player who received All-Big Ten, All-Defensive and All-Tournament honors in 2022. 
  • Courtney Wallace is one of six returning Rawlings/NFCA Gold Glove recipients from last season.
