Huskers Sweep Titles in Manhattan

Lindsey Thiele and Nicole Hansen shared individual medalist honors to lead the Nebraska “B” team to a tournament championship at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., on Tuesday.

Hansen, a junior from Bloomingdale, Ill., fired an even-par 72 in Tuesday’s final round on the 6,221-yard layout at Colbert Hills Golf Club. It followed a career-best 70 (-2) in the opening round and a second-round 77 on Monday. Hansen finished with a career-best three-round total of 219 (+3).

Thiele, a sophomore from Wahoo, Neb., joined Hansen atop the 62-player field with a final-round 78 (+6) to close with a career-best 219 (+3) over 54 holes. Thiele led the tournament at 141 (-3) through Monday’s 36 holes after producing the best two rounds (70, 71) of her collegiate career.

Freshmen Miu Takahashi (75-68-79-222) and Andrea Velez (75-75-75-225) joined Hansen and Thiele in the top 20 to power Nebraska’s four-player “B” team lineup to a six-stroke victory over Sam Houston for the championship. Takahashi (Nasu-machi, Japan) tied for fifth, while Velez (Pereira, Colombia) tied for 19th.

It marked Nebraska’s first win in 11 tournament appearances at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational. The Husker “B” team finished with a three-round score of 885 (290-291-304). Sam Houston took second at 891, while the hosts from Kansas State finished third at 898.

While the “B” team stole the show, Husker seniors Kirsten Baete and Vanessa Bouvet added two more top-25 finishes for the Nebraska “A” team. Baete (Beatrice, Neb.) used a final-round 74 to close the tournament at 222, matching Bouvet and Takahashi. Bouvet (Brunei/France) closed her tournament with a final-round 75.

Senior Megan Whittaker also supplied three solid rounds of golf to tie for 23rd at 226. Whittaker’s final-round 74 matched Baete for the second-best round by a Husker on Tuesday, trailing only Hansen’s 72. Sophomore Michaela Vavrova (Bojnice, Slovakia) put up the fourth set of scores for the Husker “A” team on Tuesday with a final-round 81 to finish with a 54-hole score of 235 (42nd). Lena Hassert (Kreuzau, Germany) rounded out NU’s nine-player contingent at Kansas State with a three-round score of 256 (60th) in the first collegiate tournament of her career.

The Huskers return to action at The Molly Collegiate at the Bayonet Golf Club in Monterey, Calif., Sept. 27-28.
