Huskers Sweep No. 74 Ball State

La Jolla, Calif. – The No. 50 ranked Nebraska men’s tennis team (7-5, 0-0 Big Ten) picked up a 4-0 sweep over No. 74 Ball State on Thursday afternoon at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

The Huskers started the afternoon with a strong performance in doubles play to jump out to a 1-0 lead. William Gleason and Calvin Mueller picked up a 6-3 win on Court 1 over Ball State’s Vince Orlando and Nathaniel Webster. Nic Wiedenhorn and Leo Linquet also won on Court 2, 6-1, against Danilo Kovacevic and Parrish Simmons.

Roni Hietaranta and Shunya Maruyama were down, 5-6, on Court 3, but the match went unfinished.

In doubles play, the Huskers continued their dominance. Wiedenhorn defeated Ball State’s Jacks Lancaster on Court 6, 6-1, 6-1, and Linquet won on Court 2 with a, 6-1, 6-2, victory against Orlando.

Gleason clinched the overall sweep for Nebraska on Court 5, 6-1, 6-2, against Sajin Smith.

The teams decided that the three remaining matches would go unfinished. Hietaranta was leading, 6-4, 4-4, on Court 1, Maruyama was leading 6-4, 4-3, on Court 2 and Mueller up a set 7-5, 1-4, on Court 4.

The Huskers will now be taking part in the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship, also at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, starting on Thursday night and continuing through the weekend.

NU then returns home to take on Omaha on Saturday, March 11 at 10 a.m. CT at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
