Huskers Sweep Mizzou in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

The seventh seed Huskers swept Mizzou Saturday night, advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament to take on Kentucky, a 10 seed. It’s Nebraska’s second sweep of the weekend, after having finished off Hofstra in three sets on Friday.

The Huskers had a couple of early scares in the match, trailing in both games one and two 3-0, before rallying back to take those games 25-14 and 25-22. Missouri tried to inject some late drama with a 4-0 scoring run in the middle of game three, however the Huskers wouldn’t be denied, going on to take the third and final set 25-18.

Mikaela Foecke had a monster night, getting 16 kills in her final game at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. “That was probably the biggest thing for me, just being able to be out there with my teammates and enjoying my last moments here,” Foecke said.

The senior did not commit a single error on the night, which impressed her head coach, John Cook. “To play at the level, no errors, two matches in a row… tell me the last player to do that,” Cook said.

Missouri head coach Wayne Kreklow was thoroughly impressed with Nebraska. “I didn’t feel that we lost the game. I felt that they beat us.”

As the Huskers took their final victory lap in Lincoln, Foecke was quick to remind her teammates to wash their hands. Why? “You don’t want to get sick,” Foecke said with a smile. “We got to play.”
