Huskers Set to Take on Illinois



The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team (1-2, 0-1 Big Ten) is set to take on Illinois (2-0, 1-0 Big Ten) Monday, Jan. 31, at 6:30 p.m. CT at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The meet was previously set to take place on Friday, Jan. 21, but was postponed due to COVID-related issues within the Illinois program. 

The last time the two teams met was in 2021 when Illinois won 196.625-195.175. The Huskers currently lead the series 27-10. 

Last Time Out

NU tallied numerous season highs Saturday afternoon against Iowa, and claimed new season highs as a team on uneven bars, vault and beam. However, NU fell to Iowa, 195.525-196.825. 

The Huskers saw their highest overall team score as well as the highest scores on uneven bars, vault and beam for the 2022 season. Individually, NU set 15 new season highs.

Senior Kaitlyn Higgins led the Huskers claiming the beam title with a score of 9.875. Higgins also notched a season-high on floor, earning a 9.825. 

Scouting the Competition

Illinois started their season against Central Michigan, winning 194.150-193.425. The Fighting Illini captured two event titles against the Chippewas. On uneven bars, Rachel Borden and Mallory Mizuki tied for first, both scoring 9.825. Mizuki also tied with Mia Townes on beam to win the Illini’s second event, scoring 9.825 on their routines. Illinois outscored Central Michigan on three of the four events to start their season off with a win. 

The Illini are coming off of a Big Ten win against Penn State, defeating the Nittany Lions 196.350-195.475 on Saturday, Jan. 29. 

Meet Information

Monday’s meet marks the Huskers Pink Night meet. Fans are encouraged to wear pink. Pink rally towels and pink pom-poms will be given out at the door while supplies last.
