The Nebraska men’s tennis team is coming off its first ranked win this season against No. 48 UCF, 4-3. The Huskers will open Big Ten play this weekend with Michigan and Michigan State after a home match against Oregon on Wednesday.

Scouting Oregon
• The Ducks enter Wednesday’s matchup with an 8-5 record, having won three of their last four matchups.
• Oregon has one player on the ITA Top-125 Singles Rankings List: (No. 79 Joshua Charlton) and one team on the ITA Top-80 Doubles Rankings List: (No. 21 Joshua Charlton/Quinn Vandecasteele).
• The Ducks recently announced the signing of Nils Schyllander who is a top-five ranked Swedish player and placed third in the single’s national championships.
Scouting Michigan
• The Wolverines enter Friday’s matchup with a 10-2 record, having won their last seven matchups.
• Michigan has three players on the ITA Top-125 Singles Rankings List: (No. 57 Andrew Fentry, No. 63 Ondrej Styler, No. 72 Jacob Bickersteth) and three teams on the ITA Top-80 Doubles Rankings List: (No. 10 Nino Ehrenschneider/Andrew Fentry, No. 50 Ondrej Styler/Gavin Young, No. 68 Arjun Honnappa/Fynn Lohse).
• They are coming off two, 4-0 sweeps over No. 2 Ohio State and No. 6 Baylor.
• The Wolverines have three Big Ten Athlete of the Week Awards, with Andrew Fentry taking home two and Ondrej Styler securing the other honor.
Scouting Michigan State
• The Spartans enter Sunday’s matchup with an 13-5 record, having won their last three matchups.
• Michigan State is led by Max Sheldon who has an 8-1 record, and Jarreau Campbell who remains uneaten on the year at 6-0.
• The Spartans began the season 6-0 in dual matches, and since then have gone 7-5 in nonconference play.
Series History
• The Ducks hold a 4-2 advantage over the Huskers, winning the last four matches of the series. Nebraska won the first two matches on neutral sites.
• Nebraska is 1-8 against Michigan, with its lone win coming in 2015 when they defeated the Wolverines 4-0 in Lincoln, Nebraska.
• The Huskers have won seven of the 12 meetings with the Spartans and have taken six of the last seven meetings.

Hietaranta Continues Strong 2022 Campaign
• Roni Hietaranta started the year off strong, winning his first six singles matches to begin the season with a 6-0 record. Dating back to the fall, he now has 15 total singles wins which marks the most on the team thus far.
• On Jan. 25, Hietaranta was named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week after singles wins over Baylor and Oklahoma. He knocked off the No. 54 ranked singles competitor in the nation, defeating Oklahoma’s Jordan Hasson, 6-4, 7-5. The Lappeenranta, Finland native also defeated Baylor’s Cole Gromley in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-3.
• Three weeks ago, Hietaranta rallied back from a 4-2 hole to knock off Wichita State’s Orel Ovil and clinch the victory for the Huskers. He won the singles match against Ovil 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Last weekend, he knocked off Princeton’s Filippos Astreinidis in consecutive sets to push his spring record to 7-3.
• Following a short injury stint, he returned against UCF and won in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-3, to give him eight wins in the spring.
Maruyama Shines In Singles Play
• Shunya Maruyama ranks second on the Huskers with13 wins, as he holds a 6-5 spring record. Four of his wins have come in the No. 3 and No. 6 spots.
• He has been victorious in five of his last seven completed matches, including singles victories in matches against UCF and SMU.
• After leading the Huskers in wins last season, he has carried over momentum to this campaign and has been a consistent force for Nebraska.
Tough Schedule
• Nebraska has matched up against seven, top 75 teams in its first 14 games to begin the spring season. They lost to No. 2 Baylor at home, 6-1, and No. 24 Oklahoma on the road, 5-2 earlier in the year.
• In the Blue-Gray National Classic, they dropped matches to both No. 29 Princeton and No. 25 Auburn. Nebraska recently lost to No. 19 Pepperdine before taking part in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships this past weekend.
• The Huskers got their first ranked win of the season as they knocked off No. 48 UCF on the road, 4-3.
• As they reach the back half of their schedule, the Huskers will meet currently ranked opponents in seven of their last 10 games.
