Huskers’ Season Ends with Regional Final Loss to Wisconsin

Three matches. Nine sets. All Wisconsin in 2019.

The Nebraska(28-5, 17-3 Big Ten) season comes to a close in the Regional Final in Madison as Wisconsin(26-6, 18-2 Big Ten) earned yet another win over the Huskers. The Badgers swept the Huskers October 5(25-22, ,21, 22), November 24(25-19, 22, 21), and again tonight(25-18, 22, 19).

The first set saw Wisconsin serve five aces while Nebraska had just a .075 hitting percentage.

“We decided we were gonna be aggressive and attack,” said coach John Cook. “Some of that is you might make some more errors.”

In the second set, Nebraska was leading or tied for 42 of the points, but Wisconsin scored five of the final six points in the set. All five of those points for the Badgers were Husker errors. Big Red improved its hitting percentage to .175 for the set but Wisconsin hit .289.

The third set saw Wisconsin hold more control has Nebraska committed 12 errors and had a -0.040 hitting percentage.

For the match, Wisconsin had 37 kills and hit a season-low .192 while Nebraska had 35 kills and also hit a season-low .062.

Jazz Sweet and Lexi Sun led the Huskers with 11 kills each. Nicklin Hames had 26 assists. Kenzie Knuckles added 22 digs.

Sweet and Sun were named to the Region All-Tournament team.

The Huskers are now 64-5 in the months of November and December since 2015. This is the first year since 2014 that Nebraska won’t appear in the Final Four.

“This whole group returns,” said Cook. “I put a football field up on the whiteboard and said ‘ok, now we’re at the 50-yard line. Here we go. We got another year and the goal is to get to Omaha.’”
