Husker Women’s Basketball 9-1 After Downing Oral Roberts

It wasn’t always pretty, but coach Amy Williams’ squad added another win Saturday. This time it was 77-67 over Oral Roberts(4-7, 0-0 Summit).

“We’ve had an interesting 10 days since we played our last ballgame,” said Williams. “I thought we came out today and had to overcome some adversity.”

Some of that adversity was with the absence of senior Grace Mitchell and junior Taylor Kissinger. Mitchell was injured in practice and is still being evaluated. Kissinger’s season ends after playing in just five games as she will have hip surgery.

On the court, Nebraska(9-1, 0-0 Big Ten) led 10-2 to start the game, but Oral Roberts storm back to lead 17-16 after the first quarter. Nebraska needed a 15-5 run in the second quarter to lead 40-30 at the half.

“I asked our team at halftime and Trinity Brady, one of our freshman, spoke up and she said ‘I think we have good energy but they just have more intensity,’” said Williams. “I think (Brady) was really accurate with that.”

The Golden Eagles cut the lead to seven on the first possession of the second half but would never get closer as the Huskers led by as much as 15 en route to the 10 point win.

Sam Haiby had a team high 20 points and four steals while Leigha Brown scored 15 points. Kate Cain scored 15 points 7-for-9 shooting and added eight rebounds and two blocks. The first blocked shot moved Cain into third all-time at Nebraska for shot blocking, passing Olympic bronze medalist Danielle Page.

“I think (Cain) is very capable of those (numbers),” said Williams. “Kate’s been playing confidently. I don’t know that we expect 7-for-9 every single time out but she’s a very high percentage shooter.”

The Huskers shot 44.6-percent from the floor, but were just 3-for-10 on 3s.

Nebraska has another extended break between games as the Huskers will host Manhattan(3-5, 0-0 Metro Atlantic) December 22 at noon.
