Huskers Ready to Battle Undefeated Nittany Lions



The Nebraska men’s gymnastics team will return to competition this Saturday, Feb. 29, for a Big Ten battle against the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The meet is slated for a 5:03 p.m. CT start and will be broadcasted live on BTN. 

Last Time Out

The No. 4 Huskers are coming off a big team win where NU took five event titles. Nebraska finished in first with a team score of 409.150, their second highest score of the season. Minnesota finished in second with a season-high team score of 404.700 while Army West Point finished in third with a team score of 389.150. 

Junior Evan Kriley led the team with two event titles, vault (14.55) and the all-around competition (81.10). Senior Jake Bonnay also notched two event titles taking home the floor title (14.55) and the parallel bars title (14.25). Freshman Cooper Giles earned his first individual title of his career on pommel horse with a score of 13.80. 

The Huskers saw team season-high scores on vault and high bar with scores of 71.30 and 66.50 respectively. Individually, nine gymnasts combined for 16 career-high scores.  

Scouting the Competition

The No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions are coming off a win against No. 15 William and Mary, 403.750-381.100. The Lions have started the season off 10-0 for the second year in a row. 

The Penn State gymnasts claimed the titles for all six individual events.

The Lions are currently ranked first on pommel horse on RoadtoNationals.com with a season-high score of 70.40. This comes with the help of two-time national champion Stephen Nedoroscik who recently claimed the pommel horse title at the World Cup in Melbourne, Australia. 

The Penn State Nittany Lions will also be led by Senior Sam Zakutney. Zakutney is a three-time All-American and won the parallel bars event at the 2019 Big Ten Championships. Zakutney won back-to-back events to end the meet (parallel bars, high bar) their last time out.
