Huskers rally, but unable to overcome early deficit against Bluejays

The Nebraska baseball team trailed Creighton 10-1 after the top of the fifth and battled back before ultimately falling to the Bluejays 12-9 at Haymarket Park Tuesday night. It was Creighton’s first win in Lincoln, and also the first season series win over Nebraska since 2010.

The Bluejays beat the Huskers in Omaha 3-1 on March 27.

In many ways, it was same song different verse for Nebraska, who’s now lost five of its last six games and is 3-9 in the month of April.

“It is crazy how we’ve gotten off to bad starts, especially defensively,” Erstad said. “Gosh, we make a mistake early, it just really hurts us. It was the same type of thing again today, but yeah. It’s frustrating.”

Scott Schreiber and junior Jesse Wilkening, Nebraska’s first two hitters in the lineup, each had a home run and combined to go 5-for-8 to lead the Husker offense. Schreiber drove in four runs as part of a 3-for-5 performance. Wilkening went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Nebraska has had little time for preparation lately. The team returned from a weekend trip at Rutgers early Monday morning, and have another three-game series around the corner all in the midst of final exams. Erstad recognized that many college teams are going through the same thing.

“It’s not ideal, but that’s what most college teams in the north deal with,” he said. “You’re travelling a lot, you’re getting in late and you have to go to school. That’s why you need to take care of yourself and you need to be strong, and just everyone has to be ready when their number is called.”

The Huskers return to action on Thursday when they open a three-game series against Nevada. First pitch from Hawks Field is set for 6:30 central.
