Huskers Prepare for Big Ten Fall Championships

The Nebraska men’s tennis team is set to compete in the Big Ten Fall Championships this weekend as they send four players to East Lansing, Mich.

Junior Shunya Maruyama, sophomore Nic Wiedenhorn, and freshmen Calvin Mueller and Roni Hietaranta will be the four Huskers making the trip.

Hietaranta enters the final weekend of fall play boasting a 6-3 record in both doubles and singles play. He is coming off a quarterfinal appearance in the ITA Regionals last weekend, as he looks to carry that momentum over into the Big Ten Championships.

Maruyama and Wiedenhorn also competed as a doubles team last weekend where they advanced to the round of 16. In singles action, Wiedenhorn is 5-3 after a four-match winning streak earlier in the season, while Maruyama is 3-3 after winning three of his first four matches.

In his first season at Nebraska, Muller has had a strong fall campaign after holding a 2-1 record in doubles action. The Bruchkoebl, Germany native began the year with two victories as he hopes to finish the fall season strong this weekend.

Seniors Dario Huber and Victor Moreno Lozano are also competing as a duo in the ITA National Fall Championships taking place in San Diego this weekend. The duo earned an at-large bid in the tournament after a semifinal appearance in the ITA Regionals, which took place last weekend at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. Play begins in Los Angeles on Friday, Nov. 5 with the opening round of the main doubles draw.
