Husker’s New Running Backs were a Bright Spot in a Forgettable Game

“It’s always darkest just before the dawn,” head coach Scott Frost said during the post-game press conference after Nebraska’s 24-19 loss to Troy. “Things will get worse before it gets better.”

With the Huskers taking on a ranked Michigan Wolverines squad on the road next week possibly without their starting quarterback, Frost is probably correct in his assumption.

But one bright spot for Nebraska in a game that had few, was the play of the Husker’s new running backs – Maurice Washington and Greg Bell.

Although Bell ran for significantly less yards than he did last week, Frost attributed that to the defensive adjustments Troy made. “If I was the [defensive] coordinator on the other side… I’d get a lot of people in the box and that’s what they did.”

Still, Bell and Washington combined for 156 yards on 14 carries apiece. Washington was the real breakout star of the game. Having only got eight carries the week before, Washington seized the opportunity the coaching staff gave him against Troy.

Washington ran for 92 yards, including a 29-yard gain in one play, coming out to an average of about six and a half yards per carry. Bell’s 62 yards were nothing to sneeze at either, but it was Washington’s ability to find the outside edges which shined brightest in the game.

Nebraska will take on Michigan at 11 A.M. this upcoming Saturday. Pregame coverage begins at six on 1400, KLIN.
