Huskers Head to Big Easy for Tulane Classic

The Nebraska women’s golf team begins its 2022 spring stroke play season when the Huskers compete in the Tulane Classic presented by Chad Brownstein (Feb. 13-15).

The three-day, 54-hole tournament on the 6,295-yard layout at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans begins on Sunday with first-round tee times off holes No. 1 and 10 at 8 a.m. (CT). The tournament continues with a second round on the same schedule Monday, before concluding with the final round on Tuesday.

Nebraska heads to New Orleans as the defending tournament champion. The 2020-21 Huskers won the team title by seven strokes with a 54-hole total of 884 (+20) a year ago, holding off Texas State (891) and the hosts from Tulane (900). All-America and 2021 Big Ten champion Kate Smith captured her first career title with a three-round score of 215 (-1), which was one stroke better than Tulane’s Carlota Palacios (216).

Kirsten Baete, who earned the top spot in the Husker lineup this week, added a fourth-place individual finish (73-76-72=221) last season. Michaela Vavrova added a top-20 finish of her own for the Big Red with a 228 that featured three consistent rounds of 76.

This year’s Tulane Classic features a strong 16-team field that includes Michigan, Iowa and Rutgers from the Big Ten, along with Boston College and Clemson from the ACC. Charlotte Memphis, North Texas, SMU, Southern Miss, Texas State, Tulane, UAB, UTSA and Wichita State round out the field.
