Will Marshall fired a career-best 68 (-4), while true freshman Quinn Yost added a 69 (-3) to fuel a final-round surge up the leaderboard for Nebraska, as the Huskers took fourth at the 18-team Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis., on Tuesday.
Marshall, a senior from Elburn, Ill., used the best round of his collegiate career to produce his best individual finish as a collegian, tying for 16th with a 36-hole score of 142 (-2). Yost, a freshman from Farmington, N.M., added a top-20 finish of his own in his collegiate debut, tying for 20th with a two-round total of 143 (-1) in the rain-shortened event on the par-72, 7,259-yard layout at University Ridge. Yost matched teammate Jeremy Sisson (Skaneateles, N.Y), who fired a career-best 68 (-4) on Monday, in a tie for 20th. Sisson, a junior, managed a final-round 75 Tuesday to finish at 143 (-1).
With Marshall and Yost leading the way, Nebraska vaulted six spots in the team standings with a final-round 280 (-8). Nebraska finished ahead of 2022 NCAA Regional qualifiers Purdue (5th, 573), South Carolina (T6th, 574), Mississippi (T6th, 574) and South Florida (T10th, 575) in the team standings. USF and Ole Miss both advanced to the 30-team NCAA Championship field a year ago.
The Huskers trailed only the team champions from Texas A&M (556), which also advanced to the 2022 NCAA Championship, along with the hosts from Wisconsin (2nd, 567) and Illinois State (3rd, 569). Nebraska’s fourth-place team finish in the strong 18-team field marked its best performance in a tournament of more than 15 teams since tying for third at the 16-team Mizzou Intercollegiate (April 4-5, 2011).
In addition to the career days for Marshall and Yost on Tuesday, Nebraska received a strong performance from two-time NJCAA All-American Harry Crockett. The sophomore from Oxted, England fired a 70 (-2) to finish the tournament in a tie for 34th at 145 (+1) in the 90-player field.
Junior Reed Malleck (York, Neb.) put up Nebraska’s fourth counting score of the day on Tuesday with a 73 (+1). Malleck closed the tournament at 152.
Nebraska will return to action at the William H. Tucker Invitational at the UNM Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, Sept. 23-24.
