Huskers Finish Fall Season at Big Ten Championships

The Nebraska men’s tennis team wrapped up its fall season with a successful showing at the Big Ten and ITA Fall National Championships.

In his first matchup, freshman Roni Hietaranta knocked off Indiana’s Carson Haskins with a 6-3, 6-1 win. He then proceeded to defeat Graydon Lair of Michigan State in another sweep, 6-1, 7-5. The first-year player dropped his round of 16 and extra match to finish off the weekend with a singles record of 2-2.

Junior Shunya Maruyama and freshman Calvin Mueller both fell short in their opening matches of the tournament. Mueller forced a tiebreaker third set, taking Indiana’s Luke Vukovic to the limit but eventually lost 6-3, 3-6, [10-7]. Both men went 4-0 in consolation play after dropping their first match of the tournament as they end the fall season with confidence.

The duo of Hietaranta and Maruyama won Thursday’s opening doubles match against Welch and Morgan of Purdue 6-0. They ended the weekend with a 1-3 record after losing their last three matches.

Senior Dario Huber and Victor Moreno Lozano competed at the ITA Fall National Championships this weekend after earning an At-Large bid. The duo went 1-2 on the weekend, winning their second match of the tournament against Alabama’s Planisek and Martin 6-4, 6-2.

Nebraska will begin its spring season against North Dakota and UNO on Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
