Huskers Fall to Hawkeyes on Heartbreaking Last-Second Field Goal

Lincoln, Neb. – In a tense Black Friday showdown, the Nebraska Cornhuskers narrowly missed out on a victory, falling 13-10 to the Iowa Hawkeyes at Memorial Stadium. The game, witnessed by 86,183 fans, ended in dramatic fashion as Iowa clinched the win with a 38-yard field goal as time expired.

Iowa Gains Early Momentum

The Huskers, who finished the season 5-7 (3-6 Big Ten), showed defensive prowess by blocking two field goal attempts, but turnovers proved costly. Iowa capitalized on Nebraska’s mistakes, including a pivotal turnover in the final minute that set up their winning field goal.

The game remained scoreless in the first quarter, thanks to Ty Robinson’s crucial block of a 30-yard field goal attempt by Iowa’s Drew Stevens. However, Iowa seized the first lead with a touchdown early in the second quarter, followed by a field goal to extend their lead to 10-0.

Huskers’ Comeback Efforts

Nebraska responded energetically, narrowing the gap to 10-7 before halftime. Chubba Purdy’s 66-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Lloyd marked the longest play allowed by Iowa this season. The Huskers continued their comeback in the third quarter, tying the game at 10-10 with Tristan Alvano’s 44-yard field goal.

Tense Final Quarter

The fourth quarter was a tight affair, with both teams struggling to gain an edge. Nebraska’s special teams and defense worked in tandem to give the Huskers good field positions, but they were unable to capitalize on these opportunities. Alvano missed a crucial 44-yard field goal attempt, leaving the game tied as the clock wound down.

Dramatic Final Minutes

In a thrilling climax, the teams exchanged interceptions in the final minute. Purdy’s pass was intercepted by Iowa, which then executed a strategic 22-yard run to set up the decisive field goal. Marshall Meeder, in his first attempt of the season, successfully kicked the 38-yard field goal, dashing Nebraska’s hopes.

Looking Ahead

Despite a valiant effort, the Huskers couldn’t secure the victory needed for bowl eligibility. As they close their 2023 season, focus will shift to building on the positives and addressing key areas for improvement in preparation for the next campaign.
