Huskers Drop Matchup with Oregon

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska men’s tennis team (4-11, 0-0 Big Ten) fell to the No. 44 Oregon Ducks (9-6, 0-1 Pac 12) 4-3 at the Dillon Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. 
 
Action started with doubles play as the No. 2 team of Dario Huber and Shunya Maruyama defeated Oregon’s Yousseff Kadiri and Ivailo Keremedchiev, 6-4. In the No. 1 spot, Victor Moreno Lozano and Nic Wiedenhorn forced a tiebreak against Oregon’s No. 25 team of Joshua Carlton and Quinn Vandecasteele, but fell 7-6 (1). With the doubles score tied one match a piece, the No. 3 team of Calvin Mueller and Patrick Cacciatore battled Oregon’s Luke Vandecasteele and Ryoma Matsushita. The Ducks won the final doubles match and led 1-0 to start singles play. 
 
In singles play, the Huskers started off strong as they won the first set in four of the six matches. At No. 2, Huber bested Oregon’s Quinn Vandecasteele 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match 1-1. The Huskers held the momentum as Moreno defeated Matsushita on Court 6, 6-2, 6-4 to take the overall 2-1 lead. NU then stretched its lead to 3-1 as Roni Hietaranta got his team-leading ninth win of the year, defeating Klov-Nilsson in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-3. 
 
The Ducks then won the next two singles matches, as Maruyama fell at No. 3, 6-1, 4-6, 0-6, and William Gleason lost his battle on Court 5, 6-7, 6-7, but the Huskers responded. On Court 1, Mueller forced a third-set against No. 79 Charlton. The Husker lost the first set, 3-6, won the second, 6-3, and dropped the hard-fought third set, 7-5. 
 
Up next, the Huskers hit the road to begin conference play as they travel to No. 12 Michigan on Friday and No. 75 Michigan State on Sunday.
