Lincoln – The third-ranked Nebraska bowling team remains in first place after the second day of the Big Red Invitational.
The Huskers had a total pinfall of 5,640 on Saturday with a team average of 225.3 through 10 matches, just ahead of top-ranked McKendree (223.7) and No 9 Youngstown State (216.7)
Saturday’s bowling was in traditional format, and All-American Cassidy Ray finished in third place in individual standings with a total pinfall of 1,172 across five matches. Kayla Verstraete (1,143) and Michelle Guarro (1,132) landed closely behind in fifth and seventh. Kendyl Hofmeister is in 13th with a pinfall of 1,110, followed by Crystal Elliott in 20th (1,067).
“The team put together another solid performance today and extended their lead over 2nd place,” said Head Coach Klempa. “Their execution was good again today and the energy was present again both from the team and the fans. We look forward to the final day tomorrow which includes our final match being broadcast live on BTN. The team is excited for the opportunity to be on television again.”
The Huskers started the day with a rematch against Quincy, claiming victory by a score of 1,193-959. Kendyl Hofmeister bowled nine consecutive strikes and Cassidy Ray and Kayla Verstraete both rolled eight in the match, as all three scored above 250 in their first round of the day. Ray led the team with a 279, followed by Verstraete (267) and Hofmeister (265). Elliott (197), and Guarro (185) rounded out NU’s scores in the game.
NU moved on to match two where they faced off against ninth-ranked Youngstown State. The match was close thought and NU kept the pressure on as four Huskers struck out in the 10th frame, but NU dropped a 1,159-1,140 decision. Guarro led the Huskers against the Penguins with eight consecutive strikes on her way to a score of 265. Ray posted a score of 247 while Verstraete (223), Elliott (213) and Hofmeister (192) rounded out the lineup.
Nebraska moved onto match three against Valparaiso, where the Huskers improved to 2-1 on the day with a 1,174-1,064 win. During the ninth frame, the bowlers all got strikes, including match leader Elliott (267). Guarro was second in pinfall this round (244), followed by Ray and Verstraete who tied with a pinfall of 224, and Hofmeister (215).
The Huskers moved on to take on No. 25 Central Missouri where they took a 1,030-945 win. Verstraete (224), Guarro (223), and Elliott (212) all scored over 200 in this match, with Hofmeister (192) and Ray (179) not far behind.
In the final match of the day, NU went on to face No. 22 Wisconsin Whitewater and continued their winning streak by a score of 1,087-1,069. Hofmeister led the Huskers this match with the help of eight strikes and a pinfall of 246. Ray closed a strong performance with a pinfall of 243, followed by Guarro (215), Verstraete (205), and Elliott (187).
Bowling resumes Sunday morning at 8:45 am with best-of-seven Baker-style play. The Huskers will be broadcasted live on BTN at 11a.m. (central) as we play against Valparaiso. The match will also be available on the Fox Sports app.
