The Nebraska soccer team (4-4-3, 2-1-0 Big Ten) continues conference play as it stays on the road to face Purdue and Indiana this week.

 

The Huskers will meet Purdue (3-7-0, 0-3-0 Big Ten) on Thursday starting at 5 p.m. (CT) at Folk Field in West Lafayette, Ind. On Sunday, Nebraska battles the Hoosiers (2-2-6, 0-2-1 Big Ten) starting at 12 p.m. (CT) at Lyle Robbie Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. Thursday’s match will air on BTN and Sunday’s game will stream on Big Ten Network+.

 

Last Time Out

NU used a goal in the eighth minute from sophomore Sarah Weber to grab the 1-0 win over Michigan on Sunday afternoon.

Next Up

The Huskers will return home to matchup with Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1:05 p.m. (CT).

Quick Notes

• Weber, a preseason player to watch, leads the conference standings in shots with 46 through 11 games of play. Junior Eleanor Dale also made the list and sits in fourth with 38 shots through 11 games.

• Weber also continues to lead the Huskers on the offensive side as she leads the team with five goals on the season, good for eighth in the Big Ten standings.

• Junior goalkeeper Sami Hauk earned her seventh career win last week and now ranks fifth in saves per game (3.45) and seventh in shutouts in the conference standings.  

• NU enters the week tied for fifth in the conference standings with six points (three points for a win, one point for a tie.) The top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Big Ten Tournament.

• Three of NU’s six freshman have seen the pitch so far this year. The Huskers started Lauryn Anglim and Sadie Waite against Michigan last week.

• Nebraska is ranked 54th in this week’s RPI, released by the NCAA on Monday.

• Nebraska’s devoted fan base has continued its strong attendance numbers at Hibner Stadium this season. In nine games this season, NU welcomed 7,413 fans, an average of 824 per contest. This average ranks 13th nationally and is second in the Big Ten, as Michigan State ranks seventh nationally with 1,545 fans per game.

• Head Coach John Walker is in his 29th season, alongside assistant coaches Ian Bridge (seventh season), Marty Everding (25th season) and Samantha Areman (second season).

 

Huskers Celebrating 29th Season in 2022

• The Nebraska soccer program is in its 29th year since the inaugural campaign in 1994. Walker has been at the helm of the team since its inception, guiding the Huskers to more than 340 all-time victories.

• Nebraska has made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances in its first 27 seasons, including two trips to the Elite Eight and eight Sweet 16 berths.

• The Huskers have captured four conference regular-season titles and six conference tournament crowns. As a member of the Big 12, NU won the regular-season championship in 1996, 1999 and 2000, while winning the tournament title in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002. Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011 and two seasons later, swept the regular-season and tournament crowns.

Scouting the Purdue Boilermakers

• Purdue is 3-7-0 overall with a 0-3-0 record in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers enter the week with a four-game losing streak, most recently falling to Michigan State, 3-1.  

• The Huskers lead the all-times series against Purdue 8-5-0, dating back to the first meeting between the schools in 2000. The Huskers last defeated the Boilermakers in 2021 in Lincoln, 2-1.

• Head Coach Drew Roff is 180-118-28 in his 16th season as head coach overall and eighth at Purdue. Roff is assisted by Jim Schneiderhahn and Kelsey Brouwer.

• Players to Watch

  • #2 Gracie Dunaway (Sophomore Forward): Team-high four goals and 10 points
  • #24 Kayla Budish (Freshman Forward): Two goals and two assists on the year   
  • #1 Sara Kile (Sophomore Goalkeeper): Has earned one shutout this season, while recording 37 saves

Scouting the Indiana Hoosiers
• Indiana is 2-2-6 this season with a 0-2-1 record in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers face Ohio State on Thursday night before its matchup against Nebraska on Sunday.
• NU leads the all-time series between the two teams, 8-1-1, dating back to 2010. Most recently, the Huskers defeated the Hoosiers in 2019 in Indiana, 2-0.  
• Head Coach Erwin Van Bennekom is 25-21-13 in his fourth season at Indiana. Bennekom is assisted by Emily Basten, Tim Verschuren and Kevin Schenk.
• Players to Watch

  • #9 Jordyn Levy (Sophomore Forward): Team-high five points (two goals and one assist)
  • #27 Ava Akeel (Redshirt Freshman Midfielder): Tied for the team-high with two goals, while also recording three shots on goal
  • #31 Jamie Gerstenberg (Sophomore Goalkeeper): Has recorded six shutouts and 34 saves this season
