Husker volleyball welcomes top-ranked transfer to roster

Nebraska head volleyball coach John Cook announced Tuesday that outside hitter Lexi Sun will transfer from Texas to Nebraska, and will be eligible to compete in 2018.

Sun, a unanimous first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2017, was the No. 1 ranked recruit in the country by PrepVolleyball.com coming out of high school and top-ranked player on the transfer market.

She will join the Nebraska program in either May or June in time for both summer classes and conditioning.

“Lexi really provides depth at the outside hitter position,” Cook said in a written statement. “What I like most about her is her commitment and desire to be a great player. She has big dreams and goals at Nebraska and beyond Nebraska. She’s a 6-2, physically gifted athlete with a tremendous work ethic.”

Sun helped Texas win the Big 12 title and reach the NCAA regional finals last season, averaging 3.27 kills per set and totaling the second most kills on the team with 337.

She received AVCA All-America honorable mention honors.

Cook recruited Sun when she was playing at Santa Fe Christian School in Solana Beach, CA, but she committed to Texas as a sophomore in high school.

Sun visited Nebraska three weeks ago, according to Cook, and had some unexpected visitors while she was in Lincoln.

“Scott Frost and Matt Davison showed up while we were at dinner with Lexi and her family and some of the Huskers, which was really cool,” Cook said. “It fired up Lexi’s family and all the Huskers. Scott’s pumped she’s coming here. We’re all pumped she’s coming here.”
