Husker Basketball Hall of Famer James Buchanan Passes Away



Lincoln – The Nebraska men’s basketball program lost one of its legendary performers with the recent passing of James Buchanan.  He died of natural causes at the age of 90 in Hudson. Fla.

Buchanan starred for the Huskers for three seasons (1949-50 to 1951-52) and was a member of the inaugural Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame class in 1989. A member of the Huskers’ 1950 Big Seven title team, he earned All-America honors in 1952, as he set a school record with 400 points in 1951-52. The first-team All-Big Seven performer led the Huskers in both scoring and field percentage in his final season at NU. He finished his career holding Nebraska scoring record with 821 career points.

Buchanan was selected in the sixth round of the 1952 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics, but joined the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1954.He played for the Phillip’s 66ers for three years. Buchanan was also a member of the Olympic practice team and traveled to the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia.

He started the local Phillips 66 Oil Company distributorship in Florida, and eventually spent time in the construction industry in the Cayman Islands overseeing many commercial and residential construction projects, including a diving resort on Little Cayman and the Turtle Farm on Grand Cayman before moving back to Florida.
