Frosts (Oregon’s) offense, Speed, and Nebraska

I happened to coach in this offense years ago, so I was forced to watch a lot of Oregon film.

The offense is sound but it needs speed. Lots of it. It also needs athleticism.

We tend to focus on the mistakes we make and all the other miscues, but Oregon had those same dumb mistakes. Holding. Personal Fouls. Etc. But they had guys that could go to the house at anytime. They could be struggling, but two players later they had 14 points.

We don’t have those guys. We won’t ever have those guys. Well, maybe one or two. But not littered on the field.

Be honest. Do you think any of our running backs would start at Illinois? I don’t think so. They look stiff. With average speed. None of them are going to make someone miss and go to the house. This offense will not work if guys can’t make plays in space. Look at what Chip did with Murray compared to McCoy. Night and day.

Finally, the offense is NOT hard for the QB. The reads are pretty vanilla. And there is always a safe check down. Martinez is not horrible, but he will never be a good QB. He would’ve NEVER started for Frost at Oregon or UCF. He is unfortunately the best we have, and like most spread offenses, it is QB dependent.

One more thing: This offense also tends to lack an identity. It is built on finesse. Flash. Inside the five, it will ALWAYS struggle. Even with lots of speed.

I don’t know the answers. But this offense will never work with our personnel. Looking at what he has been able to bring in the last few years … nope.

Sadly, I think Frost is a failed experiment. He was too young in his career to take over a down Nebraska. He doesn’t have the coaching connections. And his recruiting ability will never match the needs of his offense.
