A lot has happened this past week here at the ranch.
We made it through the blizzard with all the cattle tucked away behind a line of trees that completely blocked the wind. The air was hardly moving where the herd decided to huddle up for the day.
Now, we’re getting ready for the next one (tomorrow).
It was a bit of a weird Christmas because COVID invaded the confines of our little island. No, it wasn’t the college students that brought it home. Nor was it the traveling salesman or the high school student.
It was the work-from-home, rarely-leaves-the-ranch person. I took Ranchhand 3 to get an MRI for his back and then we went to a store afterward so he could pick out Christmas gifts for his brothers. Three days later, I started to get body aches. Two days after that, I was out helping Ranchhand 2 clearing some trees out of the road ditch. I was just moving some small branches and ended up so out of breath that I had to stop. That is when I realized that it probably wasn’t just a normal cold.
I’m doing fine. I’m still a bit tired, but doing much better than a few days ago. Considering what this virus has done to so many people, I’m feeling pretty fortunate to have gotten off this easy. I’m pretty certain that I forgot to use hand sanitizer when I got back in the car after going in the store for the Christmas gifts (I keep a container in my purse, one in the center console of the car and another in my coat pocket.) I must have touched my face or rubbed an eye or something like that.
Months of being careful was undone by a momentary lapse.
