Evaluating Husker Coaches Résumés

Since its March I wanted to take a look at the résumés of the last 50 years of Husker coaches in a way similar to evaluating NCAA tournament teams. Frost would have to win 7 of the next 6 games to match Riley’s record at Nebraska. He’d also have to win 13+ games a season for 20 straight years to catch the legendary Tom Osborne. But not all games are equal so I decided to use SP+ group opponents into 4 tiers (think Quadrants during the Selection Show). I made the tiers into Top 10 SP+ (contenders), 11-25 SP+ (good NY6 caliber teams), 26-75 SP+ (theoretical bowl eligible teams), and 76+ SP+ (struggling teams). I had a hypothesis that Frost has faced a higher percentage of top level competition resulting in a bad record, which is true. But he’s struggled more against that Tier 4 competition than any other coach in 50 years which is definitely a cause for concern.

As a follow up to this I’ll be looking at a recent history of teams around the Big 10 and how they’ve performed using a similar format.
