Vanessa Bouvet fired a one-under-par 71 on Tuesday to surge to a top-10 finish and lead the Nebraska women’s golf team at The Molly Collegiate in Seaside, Calif.
Bouvet, a senior from Brunei, produced her best round of the season on the par-72, 6,131-yard layout of the Bayonet Golf Course to finish with a three-round total of 222 (78-73-71) by slashing her scores in each successive round. The took 10th overall in a strong 83-player field.
Bouvet’s performance helped Nebraska secure a seventh-place finish in a talent-laden 14-team field, as the Huskers produced a three-round team score of 916 (307-308-301). Stanford (878) won the team title, edging out UCLA (885) and San Jose State (885), while the co-hosts from California (4th, 890) and Oregon State (5th, 904) rounded out the top five. New Mexico finished sixth (911), just five strokes ahead of the Huskers.
In addition to a top-10 effort from Bouvet, the Huskers got a second straight top-20 tournament finish from true freshman Miu Takahashi (Nasu-machi, Japan). Takahashi tied for 18th with a 54-hole score of 226 (75-76-75).
Senior Kirsten Baete put up Nebraska’s No. 3 performance in the tournament with a three-round total of 232, including a final-round 78 to tie for 39th individually.
Sophomore Lindsey Thiele produced NU’s No. 3 score on Tuesday with a 77 to move into tie for 67th with a 54-hole score of 240. Nicole Hansen rounded out the Husker contingent in a tie for 77th with a three-round total of 250 that included an 84 Tuesday.
Stanford’s Rose Zhang took medalist honors with a three-round score of 213 (-3) as the only golfer in the field to finish better than par. Stanford teammate Caroline Sturdza (76-73-67) and San Jose State’s Natasha Andrea Oon (71-74-71) tied for second with even-par scores of 216.
Nebraska will take a week off from competition next week before returning to action at the Dale McNamara Invitational in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 11-12.
