Anderson Moves to Eighth All-Time in Homers at Nebraska

Max Anderson slugged his 36th career home run to move into a tie for eighth all-time in program history, as the Huskers fell 20-5 in the series finale at No. 23 Maryland on Sunday afternoon in College Park, Md.

Nebraska (25-19-1, 10-8 Big Ten) recorded five runs and nine hits, while Maryland (33-16, 13-5 Big Ten) totaled 20 runs on 20 hits.

Will Walsh pitched 2.1 innings in the start, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout. Drew Christo dropped to 1-1 on the season after giving up two runs on one hit and a walk in 0.2 innings. Jake Bunz and Brett Sears teamed up to surrender seven runs on six hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts in one inning.

Jackson Brockett and Jalen Worthley combined to throw the next 1.2 innings, while Mason Ornelas and Caleb Clark tossed 2.1 shutout innings. Ornelas allowed one hit in 0.2, and Clark pitched 1.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out four Terrapins.

Anderson went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI and a run scored to lead the Huskers at the plate. Charlie Fischer had a 2-for-5 day with a pair of singles and a run. Garrett Anglim was 1-for-3 with a double and a run, and Dylan Carey went 1-for-3 with a two-RBI singles. Casey Burnham, Blake Mozley and Griffin Everitt each recorded one single.

Nebraska grabbed an early lead with two runs on three hits in the second. Fischer and Everitt began the inning with back-to-back singles, before Carey blooped a 2-2 pitch into shallow right field for a two-RBI single to give the Big Red the early advantage.

Maryland responded immediately with two runs on a trio of hits to tie the game at two through two innings. A single and a double down the left-field line put runners on second and third with one out, while Elijah Lambros’ two-RBI single up the middle locked the game at two.

Burnham drew a walk on full count to open the third, followed by Anderson’s double to the wall in right-center to place runners on second and third with no outs. Gabe Swansen’s RBI groundout to shortstop brought home Burnham to give Nebraska its second lead of the day.

The Terrapins grabbed a 4-3 lead in bottom of the third off the bat of Nick Lorusso. Kevin Keister reached on a leadoff infield single and was nearly stranded at first after the Husker defense retired the next two UMD hitters until Lorusso drilled the two-run shot to right.

Maryland stretched the lead to 12-3 in the fourth after eight runs on six hits. A three-run homer by Jacob Orr and a wild pitch had the Terrapins out front 8-3. UMD tacked on four more runs with a two-RBI single by Lorusso, and a two-run homer by Ian Petrutz.

Burnham began the fifth with a walk to set up Anderson’s two-run homer over the wall in right-center for his 19th homer of the season.

The Terrapins plated eight runs on five hits, highlighted by a grand slam from Lorusso, to expand the lead to 20-5 with three innings to go.

The two teams combined for scoreless innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth to preserve the win for the 23rd-ranked Terrapins in the series finale.

Nebraska returns to action with a pair of games at Creighton on Tuesday, May 9 in Omaha. The Huskers and Bluejays will resume last month’s suspended game at 5 p.m. Following the completion of the suspended game, the two teams will meet in the series finale scheduled for 7:03 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
